Titan's roots run deep, indeed — all the way back to the late Sixties, when company cofounders Bob and Heather Sanders began racing a series of FoMoCo-motivated machines on California drag strips. The husband-and-wife team ultimately advanced to a Fontana-powered Top Alcohol Dragster that regularly qualified in tough West Coast NHRA competition (and established Heather as one of the fastest females in drag racing). The couple's manufacturing credentials were established in the 1980s by Sanders Clutches — the direct descendant of Merv Scott's clutch company. Bob Sanders had long been a believer in the "slider" design promoted by Scott and, earlier, by inventor Paul Schiefer. Readily identifiable by its square (not round) drive stands, this model was lighter than other clutches; This oil-field experience with giant pumping systems made Bob a welcome addition to the loose-knit group of racers who began building experimental Top Fuel oil pumps and Hemi rocker arms under the name of Titan Speed Engineering. When Bob and Heather Sanders bought out their partners in 1992, Sanders Clutches was brought under the Titan umbrella. Over the subsequent decade, Titan greatly expanded its clutch and rocker-arm applications while introducing dual-feed, gerotor oil pumps for all popular V8s. Together with Chuck Worsham, the company also developed the dry-sump system that currently lubricates Hemi-powered machinery ranging from Pro Mod and Top Sportsman doorslammers to Worsham's fearsome AA/Funny Cars. Bob and Heather Sanders credit the feedback from loyal customers for Titan's ability to continually refine the product line. This capability — and willingness — to quickly react to the ever-changing demands of racers sets Titan Speed Engineering apart from its larger competitors. This family-run company's continued success in the 21st century demonstrates that when it comes to building race-car parts, bigger is not necessarily better. |
